Unit 1.3 - Thesis Statments

Objectives: Students will be able to...
  • Identify the criteria of a strong thesis statement
  • Practice revising weak thesis statements
  • Identify types of introduction hooks
  • Understand the parts of an introduction
  • Understand the parts of a conclusion
  • Practice identifying parts of a conclusion

Part I - Warm up
In groups, draw a picture representing the ideas of what is a good thesis. Present your picture and ideas to the class.
Answer the questions and be prepared to discuss them as a group:
  • What are the main components of a thesis?
  • What separates a good thesis statement from a bad one?

Part II - Introductory lecture

Open the Thesis commandments powerpoint. Follow along the presentation as your instructor lectures on the components of a thesis statement.

Part  III - Thesis critique

Open the diagnostic exam that you wrote in Google docs. Find your thesis. Copy and paste it directly into the thesis-statement critique worksheet and the group thesis sharing worksheet. Please do not edit your thesis yet. If you aren't sure which sentence was your thesis, copy and paste the most likely sentence or two. Follow the instructions in the worksheet and provide feedback on your group members thesis.
Bonus: If there is time rewrite your thesis (based on your experience in the group activity) in the same box as your original in the group thesis sharing worksheet.
