Unit 3.5 - Review and practice key concepts: Source Synthesis (Unit 3.2) and Logical Fallacies (Unit 1.4).

Unit 1.4 - Logical Fallacies
Objectives: Students will be able to...
  • Identify and describe the main parts of the argument (e.g. claim and evidence).
  • Identify and describe steps to refute an opposing argument: introduce opposing argument, mark it as strong/weak/true/false, provide counter-claim and evidence.
  • Construct reasonable arguments from collected sources and respond to potential counterarguments
  • Identify logical fallacies in arguments and evaluate sample arguments for such fallacies
Part 1 - Objectives discussion
Discuss the lesson objective and review your ability to meet these objectives.

Part 2 - Video presentation
Each time a new logical fallacy is named, try to explain why it is labeled the way it is.

Part 3 -  Logical fallacies - info gap activity
Open the LOGICAL FALLACIES TBI WORKSHEET & LOGICAL FALLACIES PPT. Each question corresponds to a logical fallacy and your group must look through the LOGICAL FALLACIES PPT to identify the fallacy and then write the type of fallacy in provided section in each question of the LOGICAL FALLACIES TBI WORKSHEET.

Unit 3.2 - Source Synthesis
Students will be able to:
  • Describe the difference between summarizing sources and synthesizing sources
  • Recognize connections and relationships among various sources
  • Synthesize the sources of their own research paper cohesively and effectively.
Part 1 - Objectives discussion
Discuss the lesson objective and review your ability to meet these objectives.

Part 2 - Integral vs Non integral citations
Review the Integral vs Non integral citations powerpoint and use the two models to discuss how to incorporate source synthesis into your paper with these two styles.

Part 3 - Source synthesis activity (model)
Now, based on what you have learned through practicing synthesis on articles, start practicing synthesis within your own research.Study the articles you have found for your research paper and write a brief synthesis in regards to their connection and relationship towards one another and the research paper. After completing a summary of the main points of each article, reorganize the articles based on common points. Synthesis Chart. Integrate the points for your synthesis chart into your detailed outline. If you have completed both the source synthesis chart and source integration into your outline start writing a body paragraph(s) based on your outline.
